Members' Observations - Transit of Venus 8 June 2004

mid-transit image Venus close to mid-transit of the Sun, as imaged by Guy Yeates. The markings on the Sun's surface are due to dust on the eyepiece.

These images from the 8 June 2004 transit of Venus were obtained by Guy Yeates using a Sony DSC-P32 digital camera and a Meade ETX-125 telescope. An objective solar filter was made from Baader Planetarium AstroSolar® Safety Film. He reports that he "just missed the initial entry of Venus due to a band of cloud but did see just a faint indentation on the Sun's limb that slowly grew. Watched it on/off during the morning. Went for a nap late morning and almost missed the leaving of Venus. Did see a glimpse of the tear-drop effect when Venus first made contact with the Sun's limb and a faint light halo on the sky-side of Venus's disk when it was about 40% off the Sun's disk."
